Featured directorIngmar Bergman
Ingmar Bergman was a dark storyteller, forever asking the big questions about life, love and death through the medium of his films. Like it was so beautifully filmed in his classic The Seventh Seal, he has now had his last dance with death when he left us in July 2008. |
Welcome to the Great Directors! This is the first website I built, about 12 years ago in London: a labour of love which led to nothing more than the simultaneous theft of my laptop and the bankruptcy of Talk City, my Web host at the time. Then nada. But when I found a copy of the site on an old hard drive (woo-hoo), I couldn't help but to bring it back to life. Please excuse the omissions (hey, you can always check imdb...) and the small glitches, hopefully they will disappear with time as I make incremental improvements to my old code. So... I am delighted to offer you another page about cinema, if you haven't already seen enough! Yet if you, as me, are fed up with celebrity culture, you will probably be happy to find a film site which focuses on the makers rather than the stars. I believe the listed directors are genuine artists who each have their own personal vision. To navigate these pages, just click any director name on the side bar. All the small film photos are pinpoints: click on them if you want to see the larger picture. If you're not into directors, click here to see my latest film recommendations. |
Film of the monthMoon: hypnotic
My biggest disappointment about the Oscar nominations this year is that Sam Rockwell didn't get nominated for Best Male Performance on this slow-paced but consuming film. In this lunar adventure, he plays the single character(s), unravelling after a long-term solitary mission on the Moon. Kevin Spacey does the computer companion voiceover. Incredible cinematography throurought. (2009, director: Duncan Jones, UK)
