Inspired by contemporaries: Goddard, Visconti and Passolini (who scripted The Grim Reaper for him), Bertolucci made his name with three films reflecting on the impact of political ideology on individuals. The problem of personal reconciliation with emotional or political turmoil remains a key theme thorough his films. His distinctive style combines litterary and philosophical allusions with an expressive use of mise-en-scene, complex narration, fluid camera movement and rythmic editing. Bertolucci also writes or cowrites all his films.
